Knockanean Boys -Division 1 Finalists 2010

by Oisin Ross, James Daly, Jason Herbert, Eoin Campbell

Our Knockanean Football voyage began in September 2010 when we started training with our teacher John Corbett. Our first match was a challenge match against Clarecastle which we won comfortably.  The following week we encountered Ballyea and were victorious by a one goal

margin. Jason Herbert was our captain for that match.

Next match we played was against Gael Scoil Mhicil Chiosog and Jack Hannan was the captain for that outing.   For our next match against the Ennis National School, Maurice Nugent was out with a sore leg and Jack Hannan was out with a split head.  Despite these injuries, we still managed to win. Jack McGuinness scored a brilliant goal just before he was taken off and replaced by Eoghan Perill, who continued Jack's scoring roll!  The final score was 3 goals and 9 points to 1 goal and 3 points. Our captain on that day was Tom Hannan.  We were marching on and none could stop us!  We felt confident of winning the next match as we were against Clarecastle again.  We won that match on a score line of 3 goals and 11 points to 2 points.

We were to play the CBS in the final in Cusack Park and Cian Barron got the captains job for the day.  At the end of normal time it was 4 points a piece.  CBS scored the only two points in extra time.  Eoin Campbell played amazing.  The final score was 4 points to 6 points in favour of CBS.

Knockanean Girls - Division 1 Finalists 1996

This photo is a blast from the past!  In 1995 Knockanean School contested their first girls football final, when captained by Orla Corry they defeated Scoil Chriost Ri.  A year later, they competed in the Division 1 Final when they defeated the CBS.  The team that started on the day was Bernadette McKee, Caroline Lee, Rachel Culligan, Clare Anne McKeown, Michelle Williams, Mary Kennedy, Michelle Collins, Sarah Considine (captain), Emer O'Reilly and Roisin Lucey.  It is hard to believe that 14 years later, three past pupils were on the Clare Ladies Football team that won the All Ireland.  They were Niamh Keane, Sarah Hoey and Louise Woods.  They obviously took their lead from the girls that went before them.

Boys Football By Jason Herbert
The Knockanean boys football team is now into the semi finals of the division one Primary School League. Our last match was against Ennis National School. We were up by four points at half time and we powered on into the second half to come out the winning team with a score of 3:9 to 1:3, conceding only one point in the second half. Keep your fingers crossed that our success will continue!

Our next match will be against Clarecastle National School on Thursday, the 14th of October at Gurteen.

Knockanean Past Pupils in All-Ireland Final
Congratulations to three of our past pupils Niamh Keane, and Sarah Hoey who were on the Clare team playing in the All Ireland Ladies Intermediate Football Final in Croke Park in September 2009.  We are delighted to say Clare won the match and are now All Ireland Intermediate Champions.  Well done girls.
